A Selma (Calif.) police officer was fatally shot Tuesday morning while investigating a suspicious person in a neighborhood.
Officer Gonzalo Carrasco, 24, was on patrol just before noon when he was stopped by a woman on Pine Street who said a man was on her property. Soon after while Carrasco investigated, the man shot the officer and fled the scene.
Carrasco, a two-year veteran of the force, was transported to the Community Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He is survived by his parents, brother, sisters, and girlfriend, who is expecting his first child.
The suspect was arrested following the shooting and charged with murder, being a felon in possession of a gun and ammunition, and probation violation.

On Tuesday, January 31st, the officer was on patrol in a residential neighborhood near Rose and Mitchell Avenue when a neighbor stopped him to report a suspicious person in the area. A short time later, investigators say the officer located the suspicious person and attempted to contact him when he was gunned down.
